Some people have no trouble expressing how they feel but for others it can be quite a challenge. As humans we rely on positive interactions with one another to foster a nurturing networking of support and when we’re unable to do that, it can become terribly aggravating.
The inability to express yourself and convey your feelings leads to passive-aggression, frustration, anxiety, depression and isolation. In worst cases, it also causes people to act out violently.
Here are some reasons as to why you may struggle to express yourself and share emotions with others:
1. Conflict phobia
There are people who would do whatever it takes to avoid a conflict – you could be one of them. Avoiding a conflict is usually viewed as a good thing but when it happens repeatedly at your expense, it becomes a problem.
Fear of confrontation and avoiding a conflict is casually referred to as the “ostrich phenomenon” where a person buries their head underground in hopes that the problem goes away.
In some situation, ignoring a problem can work but in most cases, some sort of confrontation is necessary to come up with a fair solution.
2. Emotional perfectionism
Back in the day, men were asked not to show their emotions because it would be perceived as “weakness”. Many people strongly believe that they should always be in control of their emotions therefore whenever they do feel vulnerable and weak; they do what they can to hold their feelings in.
3. Fear of disapproval and rejection
This is most common in bad relationships where one partner dominates the other. The submissive partner often keeps their emotions to themselves out of fear of disapproval and possibly rejection.
4. Poor self-esteem
People with poor self-esteem have a tendency to put others’ needs above theirs. They feel the need to please others and win their approval rather than doing things for their contentment.
5. Hopelessness
Hopelessness is the most self-destructive reason as to why someone chooses not to express themselves. When you’re hopeless, you’ve already decided that things will never change. You’ve given up and now you’re just waiting for things to play out the way you expect them to do. You’ve told yourself not to expect anything positive from those around you and concluded that your emotions don’t matter.
No one should have to live like that. People that struggle to express themselves need to learn how to communicate effectively in order to maintain healthy relationships and a positive environment around them.
How hypnosis helps
Hypnosis sessions can be used to help you open up. An experienced hypnotist will be able to dive into their client’s subconscious and elicit unresolved issues that prevent them from expressing themselves. They will then use the power of suggestibility to implant positive behaviors that allow the client to break out of negative thinking patterns and confront their emotions.
